Position description

The Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. We seek candidates who will develop impactful, productive and novel research programs, commit to excellence in graduate and undergraduate education, and embrace the Department's goal of fostering an inclusive and conscientious society. The ideal candidate will have to outline a vision for research and scholarship that will help advance solutions towards the design, development, and deployment of advanced nuclear reactors. In particular, we are seeking pioneers in the areas of neutronics, transport, reactor design, and all other related fields. The ability to interface with other disciplines (thermal hydraulics, nuclear materials, fuel cycle, etc.) as related to advanced nuclear reactor systems, are desirable features.

The Department of Nuclear Engineering, established in 1958, is the only nuclear engineering program in the University of California system and is actively involved in major multi-institutional research initiatives in such areas as reactor safety and licensing, neutronics, transport, reactor design, nuclear materials, nuclear waste management, medical physics, nonproliferation and applied nuclear physics. We host a vibrant and growing community of faculty and students and enjoy close relationships with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratory. The Department has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary research and education, and seeks to further develop strategic alliances with related academic units in the College of Engineering, research centers, national laboratories, and industrial partners. The rich environment afforded by the excellence in engineering at Berkeley, the resources of the national laboratories, and the strength of other departments in the College provides fertile ground for the growth and development of new faculty. To learn more about the Department of Nuclear Engineering please visit https://nuc.berkeley.edu.

In addition to developing a vibrant, cutting-edge research program, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach and develop undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in the areas of neutronics, transport, reactor design, reactor safety, and reactor licensing, and to mentor students at all levels. Candidates will have to demonstrate a commitment to excel in teaching and mentoring.

Candidates will also have to demonstrate how they plan to contribute through research, service, teaching, and mentoring to the core values of the Nuclear Engineering Department: belonging, dignity, and justice. Candidates should know that financial and in-kind resources are available to pursue activities that help accelerate our efforts to achieve our equity and inclusion goals, with the full backing of the College of Engineering. Examples of ongoing programs in the College are available at: engineering.berkeley.edu/diversity. Details of the Department's programs and resources dedicated to ensuring a welcoming, fair and inclusive environment can be found at: http://nuc.berkeley.edu/equity-and-inclusion/.

The Department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths, or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia. For more information, about potential relocation to Berkeley, or career needs of accompanying partners and spouses refer to the Office for Faculty Equity and Welfare at https://ofew.berkeley.edu/support-faculty/new-faculty.
