Assistant Professor, Special Education

Job Summary
As an Assistant Professor of Special Education, you will teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, be involved in course and curriculum development, work effectively with diverse populations of students, colleagues, and members of the community at large, engage in productive research and grant seeking activities. The Assistant Professor of Special Education may be asked to coordinate an academic program.

Job Description

Essential Job Duties
  • Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in special education and related areas.
  • Mentor, advise, and possibly supervise student teachers.
  • Assist in recruiting and retention of students.
  • Engage in service to the department, college, University, community, and the profession.
  • Maintain an active agenda of scholarly activities and research according to Boyer's principles.
  • Participate in accreditation activities and assist with program evaluation and accreditation tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from a regionally accredited institution in Special Education or a closely related field.
  • ABD considered if degree is conferred by August 7, 2023. If successful candidate is ABD, appointment will be made at a Lecturer level on a fixed contract.
  • Minimum of three years' experience teaching students with disabilities in PK-12 school settings and with helping students transition to adult life.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach using a variety of instructional modalities including both face-to-face and virtual classes.
  • Demonstrated potential for academic research and service sufficient to merit appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor at Florida Gulf Coast University.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise in any/all of the following: assessment, instructional strategies, classroom management, emotional and behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, transition.
  • Demonstrated potential to secure and manage grants and/or participate in grant seeking activities. This includes development and oversight of grant budgets.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to collaborate in a collegial manner with faculty, staff, students and others in the FGCU community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of situations, as well as problem-solve and respond with flexibility.
  • Ability to teach a full range of special education courses at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Knowledge and experience with the use of technology in distance learning and university teaching.
