Assistant Professor in Special Education

Manhattanville College is an independent, coeducational, liberal arts college located about 30 miles north of New York City on a picturesque campus of 100 acres. The School of Education, which is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), offers 23 undergraduate programs, 66 graduate programs, and 1 doctoral program in educational leadership with three different pathways. The School of Education offers dual degree programs for undergraduate students to complete a bachelor's degree and master's degree program in education in 5½ years. A graduate accelerated program, Jump Start, prepares primarily career changers to teach while earning a master's degree. The Changing Suburbs Institute® (CSI) is the School of Education's signature community outreach program that involves productive relationships with 17 professional development schools in 8 diverse local school districts. CSI has a significant Hispanic parent outreach program that has been recognized by the White House as a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education. The Rose Institute for Learning and Literacy trains teachers to use a multisensory, phonics-based approach for K-2 literacy instruction.

The School of Education (SOE) is seeking a full-time, Tenured Track Assistant Professor in Special Education, to begin in the Fall 2022 semester. Candidates must have an earned doctorate by August 2022 or evidence of near completion of a doctorate. The successful candidate must also have a record of demonstrated excellence in teaching and the promise for solid research in the field. TheSchool of Education strives to create a supportive and inclusive environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching foundational, curriculum, research, and assessment courses in the childhood and early childhood special education programs

  • Further develop the early childhood and childhood special education programs, based on current and future "best practices."

  • The potential for the supervision of student teachers seeking certification in special education

  • Assume a leadership role in the Department of Special Education and the School of Education by serving on key committees and engaging in the accreditation process

  • Continue with scholarship in early childhood and childhood special education through peer-reviewed publications and presentations


Preferred Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate and eligible for New York State certification in early childhood and/or childhood special education

  • Successful teaching experience in public or private elementary or pre-K schools for a minimum of six years.

  • Evidence of research in childhood and/or early childhood special education curriculum

  • Teaching experience at the college level
